The CO-OP Country Library
The CO-OP would like to call attention to a book that has been around since 1978. This is "Living on a Few Acres". It was published by the USDA, specifically, Jack Hayes, who wrote the Preface, and a host of other contributors.
Living on a Few Acres is a good read for those who have made the decision to leave town and become self sufficient on the land. It is also very helpful for those who have already made the move from town out onto the land. It is a good reference book. And it makes clear that neither city life nor rural life is perfect. It is a matter of trade offs
This book also touches on the business aspect of moving to the country. Although the book is more than 30 years old, not much has changed when it comes to hopes of making a small farm pay for itself.
Living on a Few Acres is available at Amazon.com. We found a copy for $2.
This is the second book we would like to recommend. "Stocking Up" by Carol Hupping. At left you see Stocking Up III, the 1987 updated version. A few updated versions are available. Most sell for about $6 and up, new and used from Amazon.com.
This book gives instructions for canning all produce from your garden/fruit trees and the dirrections are super easy to understand.
Storing meat may be part of your small farm future, and this book has great instructions, complete with a variety of recipes. Good information.
